Leading Virtual Teams

Build connected, high-performing teams – remote and hybrid – across distance and time zones

Leading Virtual Teams

CTO’s Leading virtual teams program is a full-day practical course for leaders managing remote, hybrid or distributed teams, building the specific skills that in-person leadership cannot substitute for across distance. It covers building trust virtually, managing performance without direct observation, running productive online meetings, supporting remote well-being and using technology to enable rather than hinder team effectiveness.

    The challenge

Leading remote and hybrid teams requires a fundamentally different skill set from traditional in-person leadership. Distance creates communication gaps, makes trust harder to build and complicates performance management in ways most leaders have never been formally trained to handle.

The result is predictable: team cohesion erodes, productivity becomes harder to monitor and people disengage, often without the leader even realising it is happening. With 69% of Australian employers now offering hybrid arrangements, virtual leadership is no longer optional. It is essential.

Managing people you can see every day is challenging. Leading a team you cannot see requires a completely different and more deliberate set of skills.

This program gives leaders the practical skills to build connected, high-performing teams across any distance, whether fully remote, hybrid or geographically distributed.

    Who should attend

    • Managers of fully remote or hybrid teams
    • Leaders of geographically distributed teams across multiple locations or time zones
    • Project managers coordinating virtual collaboration across departments or organisations

    • Running productive, engaging virtual meetings that people actually want to attend
    • Creating team culture and genuine collaboration in remote and hybrid environments

  • How CTO makes the learning stick

    Before training

CTO works with the you and your nominated contact to understand the team’s current virtual working environment – the tools used, the key challenges and what great virtual leadership looks like in this specific context. Microsoft Teams scenarios are incorporated where relevant.

    During training

Participants work through practical virtual leadership scenarios and communication frameworks. The session itself is often delivered online, making the learning environment a direct reflection of the challenge being addressed.

    After training

Participants receive a virtual team leadership toolkit including templates for team norms, meeting structures and one-to-one frameworks. Follow-up programs are available for organisations investing in broader hybrid leadership capability.
