  • Developing Assertiveness

    The challenge

Most people sit somewhere between two uncomfortable extremes: the passive communicator who avoids conflict, stays quiet when they should speak up and says yes when they mean no, and the aggressive communicator who is direct in ways that damage relationships and create resistance. Neither works.

Assertiveness is the third option. It is the ability to communicate clearly, honestly and confidently, expressing what you need, setting boundaries that hold and holding your position under pressure without aggression, manipulation or apology.

It is a learnable skill. And it is one that significantly affects professional effectiveness, self-respect and the quality of working relationships across every level of the organisation.

Assertiveness is not about being difficult. It is about being honest with yourself and with others, in ways that build genuine professional respect.

This program builds the specific communication skills and confidence that allow professionals to speak up, hold their ground and engage with difficult conversations without either backing down or becoming adversarial.

    Who should attend

    • Professionals who consistently avoid conflict, stay quiet in meetings or agree to things they do not want to agree to
    • People who feel their contributions are regularly overlooked or undervalued despite their capability
    • Anyone who knows what they want to say but lacks the confidence or the language to say it effectively
    • Managers who need to set clearer expectations, give direct feedback and hold people accountable

  • How CTO makes the learning stick

    Before training

CTO works with you and your nominated contact to understand the specific communication challenges in your team’s context, where passivity or aggression shows up most often and what assertive communication needs to look like in your workplace. Scenarios are built around these specifics.

    During training

Participants work through realistic role-play scenarios drawn from their actual working situations. The facilitator creates a genuinely safe environment where people practise skills they find difficult with live coaching and peer feedback throughout.

    After training

A practical assertiveness toolkit and communication language guide are provided post-training. This course pairs naturally with Conflict management and Effective communication for a broader interpersonal skills program.
