Strategic Planning

Turn day-to-day management into long-term direction – lead with intention, not reaction

About Strategic Planning

CTO’s Strategic planning program is a full-day course for leaders who need to think and act at a strategic level, moving beyond day-to-day operational management to set clear direction, identify opportunities and translate vision into action. It covers the distinction between strategic and operational thinking, environmental analysis, developing strategic direction, engaging stakeholders and adapting strategy as circumstances evolve.

  • Strategic Planning

    The challenge

Many leaders confuse planning with strategising. They create detailed operational plans that become obsolete when circumstances change because the plans are built on activity rather than direction. True strategic thinking requires stepping back from day-to-day demands to identify where the organisation needs to go and how to get there.

Without this capability, leaders react to events rather than shaping their future. They manage what is in front of them rather than building toward what matters. Success becomes a matter of circumstance rather than intention.

Plans change. Direction endures. Strategic leaders know the difference.

This program gives leaders the frameworks and thinking tools to move beyond tactical firefighting and build genuine strategic capability, turning vision into direction and direction into results.

  • How CTO makes the learning stick

    Before training

CTO will work with you and your nominated contact to understand the strategic context your leaders operate in the sector, the organisation’s current challenges and what strategic thinking needs to look like in practice for your team. Scenarios and frameworks are shaped around your actual context.

    During training

Participants work through structured strategic thinking exercises and frameworks applied to real organisational scenarios. Group discussion and peer challenge are built into the session to sharpen thinking and test assumptions.

    After training

A strategic planning toolkit is provided post-training including key frameworks and planning templates. Extended programs combining Strategic planning with Change management are available for senior leadership teams.
