How it works in practice: Many teams complete Introduction, Intermediate and Advanced as a structured sequence, while others start at Intermediate or Advanced based on existing skills. Specialist courses sit alongside the core pathway. Participants typically take these after Advanced, though Functions can be combined with Intermediate, depending on need. When you choose CTO, all courses can be customised, combined or scaled to the number of days that suits your organisation.

  • Specialist Course · 2 Days

    VBA for Excel

Automate Excel: write code that removes the ceiling on what’s possible

    Course overview

If Microsoft Excel Advanced is the ceiling of what you can do without code, VBA is the door that removes the ceiling. This two-day course teaches you to automate Excel: writing code that handles repetitive tasks, builds interactive tools and creates solutions that would take hours to do manually.

No programming experience required. The course introduces coding concepts in a practical, step-by-step way, always grounded in real Excel use cases. By the end of day two, participants leave with working VBA solutions, not theoretical knowledge.

What you’ll be able to do

    • Navigate and use the VBA Editor confidently: the environment where all Excel automation is written and tested
    • Understand the Excel object model: how VBA sees and interacts with workbooks, worksheets, cells and ranges
    • Write Sub routines and macros to automate repetitive Excel tasks without manual steps
    • Declare and use variables: including data types, scope and arrays for flexible, reusable code
    • Create user-defined functions that extend Excel’s built-in formula library with custom logic
    • Write programming logic using IF statements, Select Case, For loops and Do loops
    • Build custom user forms with text boxes, combo boxes and command buttons for professional data entry
    • Create event-driven code that runs automatically when a workbook opens or a cell changes
    • Implement error-handling routines so your solutions behave reliably, even when users do the unexpected

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which Excel course my team needs?

The quickest way is a brief conversation with a CTO specialist. As a starting point: if participants have never used Excel, start with Introduction. If they use it daily but know there are gaps, Intermediate. If they work with large datasets, complex formulas or need to build reports, Advanced. Specialist courses are for users who have completed Advanced and want to go deeper in a specific area. Call us and we will help you determine the right level based on what your team currently does with Excel.

Can we combine content from multiple courses into one session?

Yes. A two-day program covering Introduction and Intermediate, or Intermediate and Advanced, is one of the most common formats we deliver. You can also combine topics from different levels into a single customised session. Talk to a CTO specialist about what you are trying to achieve and we will design the program around that.

Is this training available onsite across all of Australia?

Yes. CTO delivers Microsoft Excel training onsite at client locations in every state and territory, including regional and remote areas. All courses are also available as live, instructor-led online sessions via Microsoft Teams with the same content and quality as in-person delivery.

Do participants need any software installed?

Participants will need Microsoft Excel installed on their computers — ideally the version their organisation currently uses. For onsite sessions, participants work on their own machines with their own data wherever possible, which makes the learning immediately applicable. We will confirm software requirements when we finalise your program.

Can Excel training be combined with other Microsoft 365 programs?

Yes. Combining Excel training with other Microsoft 365 programs — particularly SharePoint and OneDrive for file management, or Teams for collaboration — is particularly effective for organisations looking to improve their overall data and productivity workflows. Talk to a CTO specialist about the right combination for your team.

Not sure which Excel course is right for your team?

Call us and we will help identify the right level and format for your team’s skill level and goals.
