Know your Access training journey

Microsoft Access sits in a specific but important space – it handles the data management problems that Excel has outgrown but that don’t yet need a full enterprise database system. These two courses cover that territory, from building your first properly structured database through to advanced queries, forms and reporting.

📗 Core Access Courses: The Progressive Pathway
Introduction
Advanced

Introduction is the right starting point for anyone new to Access or to relational databases generally. Advanced suits existing Access users who want to build more sophisticated queries, automation and reporting solutions. Both levels can be customised around your organisation’s actual data requirements – the exercises and scenarios used throughout the session are built around what you need to build or maintain.

    Microsoft Access Introduction

Build a properly structured relational database from the ground up

    Course overview

When a spreadsheet stops being manageable, when it has too many columns, too many sheets, too many people trying to use it at once, the answer is usually a relational database. Microsoft Access is the most practical tool for building one without the cost or complexity of an enterprise system.

This one-day course covers the foundations of proper database design before teaching you the Access tools that implement it. You will learn why relational databases are structured the way they are, how to design a table structure that avoids duplication and inconsistency, and how to build the queries, forms and reports that make a database genuinely useful. By the end of the day, you will have a working database built around a real scenario from your organisation.

What you’ll be able to do

    • Design a relational database structure that organises data without duplication or inconsistency
    • Create tables with correct field types, validation rules and default values
    • Build table relationships and understand how referential integrity protects your data
    • Import data into Access from Excel, CSV and other sources
    • Build select queries to retrieve and filter data from single and multiple tables
    • Use query criteria, calculated fields and aggregate functions
    • Create data entry forms with controls, validation and a user-friendly layout
    • Build reports that summarise and present data for decision-making or distribution
    • Use macros to automate routine database tasks without writing code

    Who should attend

    • Professionals who need to build or maintain an Access database for business data management
    • Teams whose Excel spreadsheets have grown too complex and need proper relational structure
    • Anyone new to Access or to relational databases who wants to learn it properly from the start

    Microsoft Access Advanced

Build more sophisticated queries, forms and reporting solutions in Access

    Course overview

If you already use Access and want to build more powerful, more maintainable and more capable database solutions, this course takes you there. Advanced Access training goes beyond the basics of table design and simple queries into the techniques that make a database genuinely flexible and scalable.

You will learn how to build action queries that update, append or delete records automatically, how to create more sophisticated data entry forms that protect data integrity and guide users through complex inputs, and how to design reports that present the right information to the right audience. For teams with an existing Access database that has grown beyond its original design, this is also the course that addresses the structural debt that builds up over time.

What you’ll be able to do

    • Build advanced select queries using multiple tables, complex criteria and calculated fields
    • Create action queries – make-table, update, append and delete – to automate data management tasks
    • Design sophisticated data entry forms with subforms, combo boxes, validation and conditional formatting
    • Build advanced reports with grouping, sorting, calculated totals and professional layout
    • Use macros and event-driven automation to guide users through complex database workflows
    • Optimise queries and database structure for performance and long-term maintainability
    • Link Access to external data sources including Excel, SharePoint and SQL Server

    Who should attend

    • Existing Access users who want to build more sophisticated queries, forms and reporting solutions
    • Anyone responsible for maintaining or extending a complex Access database application
    • Database developers wanting to apply proper design and automation techniques to their solutions
